Artist Friendships: Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo

These are two female artist’s whose work has really resonated with me. I never knew they were friends! They met in Paris, and both ended up fleeing to Mexico where they became close friends. Now understanding this context, I am able to see connections in their art, looking at their bodies of work individually versus together. Their work is important in the historiography of surrealism as it was a movement that excluded women. These two women successfully were able to break into it, creating significant and transient works. This relationship is a reminder of how important it is to build friendships with other artists along the way. Nobody will understand your struggles like another artist.
